Bacteriostatic Water for Injection USP contains 0.9% (9mg/mL) benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. This allows the vial to be punctured multiple times over a 28-day period without bacterial proliferation. In contrast, Sterile Water for Injection (SWFI) contains zero preservatives and must be used immediately in a single session and any excess discarded.
